Today in Extraordinarily Odd

Just when you thought the adorable German polar bear phase was over with the exit of little Knut, there’s a new bear on the block in Germany and he’s got his own website as the Nuremberg Zoo tries to come up with a name for him. Clearly polar bear cubs rate well among the tourists because "We're getting 15 e-mails with name suggestions every minute," city spokesman Robert Hackner said. "This afternoon we received over 1,000 suggestion for a name." What this really means is that this new nameless polar bear is the polar bear equivalent of Ashley Tisdale and Vanessa Hudgens. Minus the nose job and nude pics. Although, who knows. Maybe that’s in the works [source]

Telephone companies have cut off F.B.I. wiretaps used to eavesdrop on suspects because of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s repeated failures to pay phone bills on time. Who knew it was that freaking easy? All this time we’re talking about how it’s a breach of civil rights and how it needs to stop and all that needed to happen was to literally just pull the plug. This is like Al Capone getting sent to jail for mail fraud. Plus, it’s sort of like the FBI is a petulant teenager and the phone company is the mother. No, FBI, if you can’t pay your bills you don’t get to wiretap. Now go to your room and think about what you’ve done. [source]

Sir Edmund Hillary, the first man to reach the top of Mount Everest, the tallest peak in the world, died yesterday but it happened too late so I’m mentioning it today. This isn’t actually oddball news – because really, “old man dies” isn’t really a startling headline. His face appeared on the New Zealand 5 dollar note. I wonder if you get a free stack of 5s in New Zealand if your face is on the currency. Anyway, so who does that leave New Zealand with right now? There’s Peter Jackson and Russell Crowe left. Plus a couple of sheep. Oh, and those guys from the Flight of the Conchords. Yeah, New Zealand still has life in her yet. [source]
