The story of Miss New Jersey, Amy Polumbo, being blackmailed by some mysterious character who is threatening to go public with damning photos of her unless she steps down by a certain date has been developing over the past week and so as pressure has built, public interest has escalated.
Consequently, she was on the Today Show talking about it and Matt Lauer asked the fairly understandable question, “If these were photos that you had posted in your facebook account, in other words, your family members and friends could see it, how racy could they be? How damaging could they be?”
Her response, “…They’re not that bad. I’m a normal college girl.” Then later, “I’m not doing anything illegal.”
Which sounded a little too insistent. Like, you could tell she was saying that while smiling and digging her fingernails into the palms of her hands while sweating and hoping the cameras don’t catch a glimpse of the genetic abomination of a creature that lives in her ass crack and eats flies which is grabs from the air with long, hairy arms. Isn’t that obvious to everyone?
So, what’s she doing here on TV about what seems to boil down to nothing? She’s doing the same thing former Miss USA Tara Connor and Paris Hilton did. She’s playing the role of the sweet, popular high school kid who is treating the media like a conservative parent of one of her friends before she goes behind the math block to smoke weed and dole out hand jobs for 15 bucks a piece. She’s just saying the right thing to make sure she remains blandly translatable to mainstream America. Ok, maybe that’s harsh. There could be another explanation.
It’s far more likely that being Miss New Jersey is sort of like being Susan Lucci. So close and yet so far away from any real greatness. This is probably the best thing she can possibly hope for in terms of exposure which might suggest that actually this is some kind of inside job. Hell, the New York Times covered it. What’s in the photos? Who cares, she’s still smiling and I’m already so damned tired. [source]
