While it's all very tragic that Damon Mootoo came to Queens, New York to visit his brother and 12 hours after arriving in the city he got lost and
wasn't seen for 5 days until someone saw him shivering in a corner and drove him home - it's not so much a testament to the enormity and forbidding nature of New York as it is to the crippling inability of a man to merely function in society.
He wasn't challenged in any way, he was just shy and couldn't ask for food, water or directions for fear of being beaten up or embarassed.
"I want to go home," Mootoo said. "I'm thinking about going back to Guyana."
Going back? What on earth for? Queens is clearly the place for Mr. Mootoo - surely he can see that.
